Artist-in-Residence in Cairo

In cooperation with the Austrian Cultural Forum Cairo (ACF) and the Federal Ministry of Housing, Arts, Culture, Media and Sport (BMWKMS), the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna announces an artist-in-residence in Cairo for graduates of the Academy.

Graduates of the Institute of Fine Arts graduating between the summer semester 2025 and the winter semester 2026/27 are invited to apply for the residency in spring 2027. The residency aims to support artistic projects and foster networking with local artists.

The Artist-in-Residency includes:

Stay between March and June 2027 for a period of eight weeks (arrival and departure by arrangement
Accommodation at the Austrian Cultural Forum Cairo
Job opportunity and networking on site
Artist talk/presentation at the Austrian Cultural Forum Cairo during the stay and/or subsequent presentation in the following program year
Scholarship of 1,500 euros per month (processing and payment via BMWKMS; this amount already includes a travel allowance)
Subsidy for visa costs and material costs in the amount of 500 euros (paid via the academy)
Exchange with artist from Cairo:
From August to October 2027, an up-and-coming artist from Cairo will be invited to a residency at PART – International Art Residency Austria in Vienna. Both artists-in-residence are encouraged to be willing to network – for example through exchange and recommendations in advance as well as on-site meetings – to facilitate their arrival in Cairo or Vienna. In your application, please briefly state how you envisage this exchange.
After the end of the stay: Report of the artist-in-residence stay (in text form, photo documentation, film or other media)

The organization of the trip (booking, visa, insurance) is the responsibility of the artist-in-residence. For travel on site, within Egypt, please note the daily travel warnings of the BMEIA.

Eligible to submit

Graduates of the Institute of Fine Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, who have graduated in the last two years or will complete by January 2027 (03/2025 – 01/2027: summer semester 2025, academic year 2025/26, winter semester 2026/27 and diploma students registered for January 2027).

Selection process

The participants will be selected by a jury with representatives from the Academy, the Austrian Cultural Forum Cairo and the Federal Ministry of Housing, Arts, Culture, Media and Sports:

Schedule

Jury meeting: November 2026
Residency: between mid-March and June 2027 for a period of eight weeks (arrival and departure by arrangement)

Submission of report: by September 2027 at the latest

The selected artist will be notified by mid-December 2026 at the latest.

Submission documents

CV with information on education and overview of previous artistic career (solo and group exhibitions, scholarships and prizes)
Portfolio with 5 selected works/projects from the previous artistic curriculum vitae
Short letter of motivation (PDF, max. 30 pages, max. 10 MB)
Diploma notification (persons who will take the diploma examination in January 2027 must submit the diploma notification later).
