Call for proposals for discourse-generating projects in dealing with public spheres on the topic "The art of not being governed in this way" (Michel Foucault)

Initial situation

The engagement with different urban publics, with diverse addressees and actors is one of the declared focuses of the academy. It characterizes its understanding of artistic practice and its mediation, of scientific work and university-political profiling. This also includes interventions in public space, discussions as well as actionist and activist art forms. The advisory board Academy | Art | Public Sphere has set itself the goal of promoting this socio-political work at the institution and of setting accents externally in order to become more proactively involved in public debates in this sense. Election year and democracy in focus

Against the backdrop of the major election year in Austria (including the National Council elections in the fall), Academy | Art | Public Sphere is focusing its activities this year on "Defending Democracy". With its two curated events Platz nehmen #2 (on 25.6.2024) and #3 (on 24.10.2024), which will take place at Schillerplatz, democratic processes will be stimulated with different artistic concepts and methods. This year's annual call will also be placed under this focus and advertised under the motto coined by Foucault of an "The art of not being governed in this way".

Content of the call for proposals – requirements project/artwork/action

What conditions are needed to be able to live together in solidarity in the future? What debates and developments can the Academy help to initiate in society? What is good government? What rights and duties must be exercised in a democracy? Who is not heard or excluded in our democratic system? How can we counteract the strengthening of anti-democratic forces? What dangers is our society exposed to? Where do populism and propaganda threaten to topple our system? What responsibility do I bear myself?

We are looking for flexible and temporary actionist or discursive interventions, activities and projects in public (analog or digital) space that deal with these issues and contribute with concepts for good coexistence.
