Grant for Open Access Publication Costs of the Academy

The Academy's Open Access Publication Grant is intended to support (Gold) Open Access of academic publications that are the result of research activities at the Academy or are not covered by third-party-funded projects at the Academy.

The prerequisite for funding is that it is a quality-assured (peer-reviewed) publication. A total of 10,000 euros is available annually for this purpose. The funding particularly is aimed at students who would like to publish a revised version of their dissertation as an open access book.

Amount of the grant for publication costs:

  • Funding is provided as cost subsidy of EUR 2,000 per publication for Article Processing Charges (APCs) or Book Processing Charges (BPCs).

Eligibility for participation:

  • All employees and doctoral candidates of the Academy are eligible to participate. Young researchers in particular are encouraged to submit.
  • In addition, former employees whose employment has not been terminated for more than 1 year can submit.
  • Former doctoral candidates of the Academy are eligible to apply if the date of the defensio was no more than 2 years ago. 

Decision-making procedure:

  • The funding decision on the grant for the publication costs is made by Art | Research | Support unit.
  • Funding is allocated on a first come, first served basis. There is no legal entitlement to this funding.

Requirements for submissions:

  • The applicant must be the corresponding author of the submitted publication. The corresponding author is the person who is the official contact person for the publisher with regard to the submitted contribution and is identified as such in the publication itself.
  • In the case of edited volumes, the applicant must be the editor. The editor must either be a staff member or doctoral candidate at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, or more than 50% of the contributions must have been written by staff members or doctoral candidates at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
  • Funding is available for
    • the costs of quality-assured (peer-reviewed) journal articles with a “CC BY” license in DOAJ-listed gold open access journals (“fully open access”, simultaneous open access publication). The selected publication medium must be checked in advance using the Journal Checker Tool and must be listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
    • the costs of quality-assured (peer-reviewed) edited volumes with “CC BY” license (“fully open access”, simultaneous open access publication).
    • the costs for quality-assured (peer-reviewed) book publications (monograph, edited volume, conference proceedings) that are published in accordance with the Plan S criteria under a Creative Commons license and where the embargo period should be as short as possible and never exceed 12 months.
  • Costs are only covered for Article Processing Charges (APCs) and Book Processing Charges (BPCs).
  • Funding is only possible for new publications. Reimbursement of Article Processing Charges (APCs) or Book Processing Charges (BPCs) in retrospect is not possible.

Submission modalities:

  • Submissions can only be made via the Academy's submission platform using the online application form.
  • Submissions can only be made as soon as an Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) and a confirmation of publication or acceptance from the journal or publisher have been received.
  • The Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) and a confirmation of publication or confirmation of acceptance from the publisher must be uploaded in PDF format.
  • For book publications, the academic publisher must confirm that the book manuscript has undergone a standard, high-quality quality assurance procedure (peer review) organized by the publisher and has been accepted for publication (AAM). In addition, an expected publication date must be confirmed by the publisher.
  • For the publication of dissertations, the publication must be a revised version of the final thesis.
  • If funding is granted, the applicant is obligated to refer to the funding by the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the publication (“Acknowledgement”).
  • In addition, the applicant is obligated to archive the publication in the Academy's repository.

Deadline:

  • Submissions can be made on an ongoing basis. Decisions will be communicated promptly after submission.

After funding has been awarded:

  • After payment, the publisher's invoice for the fees (APC's or BPC's) and the corresponding payment confirmation can be sent to openaccess@akbild.ac.at together with the request for reimbursement.
  • Providing the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) of the publication to openaccess@akbild.ac.at for archiving the publication in the Academy's repository.
