Exhibit Studio Coordinator for the Contemporary Exhibitions Office

The Contemporary Exhibitions Office is looking for two student employees to coordinate the Exhibit Studio for the academic year 2023/24 (December 2023 to November 2024). The Exhibit Studio is an exhibition space of around 100 sqm in the main Academy building at Schillerplatz, which opened in autumn of 2021. It offers students the opportunity to organize exhibition projects autonomously.

 

Position profile

As a coordinator, you will work in the Contemporary Exhibitions Office and serve as a point of contact for the Exhibit Studio space. You will communicate with Academy students, research possible project ideas, and review proposal submissions. You will be responsible for deciding which projects are selected and supporting the students in implementing their exhibitions. It is planned that the annual program of the Exhibit Studio will be summarized in a magazine at the end of each academic year.

We invite applicants from students in the secondary stages of their studies at the Academy. Applications may be submitted individually or as a duo, whereby in the case of the latter, it is preferable if the two members are studying in different institutes or studios.

 

Desired qualifications:

  • interdisciplinary interest in the academic and artistic curriculum and practices of the Academy, which should be reflected in the exhibition program
  • enthusiasm for producing exhibitions, excellent organizational skills, and a disciplined and conscientious approach to work
  • good knowledge of both written and spoken German and English
  • independent and proactive work ethic
  • high social competence and communication skills
  • gender competence and discrimination critical competence

Experience in contemporary exhibition-making, knowledge of exhibition theory, and/or art education are desirable but not a prerequisite to apply.

 

Conditions of employment

The successful candidates will begin with an introductory phase that provides insight into the institutional procedures. The opening of the first exhibition is planned for March 2024. Exhibitions and events can be realized in the space up to and including October 2024.

A project budget is available, which the coordinators manage with the support of the Contemporary Exhibitions Office and which can be used to cover the following costs: Fees, production, transportation, material costs for exhibition and presentation architecture, production of exhibition posters and designs, costs for supporting program events, and photo documentation.

The application documents should be uploaded as two separate PDF files (file size: 2 MB each) and include the following:

  1. curriculum vitae
  2. letter of motivation (about half an A4 page), detailing what your particular interests or concerns as a coordinator of the Exhibit Studio would be, and your ideas for the programming and supervision of the space.

 

After the application deadline, the Exhibition Committee of the Academy will select candidates to be interviewed.

 

General terms

The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna pays the role. Students will receive a contract as student assistant with a monthly gross salary of EUR 499,80 plus bonus payments for 8.40 hours per week from December 1st, 2023, to November 30th, 2024. The work schedule can be arranged in consultation with the Contemporary Exhibitions Office. A student can be employed in up to one student assistant position at the Academy. Any previous contracts as a student assistant must be completed at least six months prior. A student can only graduate by November 30th, 2024, to be eligible for the position.

Unfortunately, due to the specifics, describe this activity is not excepted by the Act Governing the Employment of Foreign Nationals (AuslBG). For third-country nationals, an employment permit with a labor market check (Beschäftigungsbewilligung ohne Arbeitsmarktprüfung) has to be submitted to the AMS, the Austrian unemployment office before the commencement of the contract and the start of employment:
