Exhibit - exhibition projects from fall 2023

Deadline: Friday, Oct 28, 2022, 11:00am

As of now, the Vice Rector’s Office for Art | Teaching of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is accepting proposals for exhibition projects to be presented in the Exhibit Galerie at Schillerplatz 3 starting from fall 2023. The call addresses persons both outside and inside the Academy.

Info sessions will be held via Zoom on 20.9., 4 pm and 6.10., 10 am: https://akbild-ac-at.zoom.us/j/95738644637, Meeting-ID: 957 3864 4637

1. Content of the call - Intention

The Exhibit Galerie features exhibitions that evolve from the teaching activities of the institutes and departments of the Academy. Therefore, preference will be given to projects that are concerned with thinking about the development of exhibitions in connection with university teaching. This connection can be demonstrated by the fact that 1.) the project explores exhibition making and curatorial questions as part of its concept, or 2.) the project results from a course and/or is related to a semester focus of the Academy. 3.) Optionally, provided the prerequisites are met (see info sheet), the conception of the exhibition may be theoretically accompanied by the course “Curatorial Studies” starting in the summer semester of 2023.

Knowledge of exhibition practice or curatorial experience is required, as is a connection of the submitted project to the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the artistic-scientific practice and research taking place there. It is also desired that a large proportion of the artists to be exhibited will be students and/or graduates of the Academy.

2. Budget

The basic budget is to be understood as a service package of the exhibition spaces, in which the technical and organizational support of projects is listed:

  • fixed components of the exhibition production (exhibition texts, insurance, opening drinks, waste disposal, etc.)
  • operation of the exhibition (supervision, etc.),
  • public relations work including printed matter.

The budget provided for this purpose is earmarked for a specific purpose and cannot be reallocated.

The maximum operational budget provided by the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna per exhibition is 10,000 euros (gross = net): e.g. production of new works, material, transport, displays, equipment rentals, fees, etc.; plus max. 1,500 euros (gross = net) for additional program in context of the exhibition. Aspects of sustainability should be taken into account in exhibition and budget planning, especially with regard to the resource-saving use of materials for exhibition production.

3. Room

The Exhibit Galerie in the Academy building at Schillerplatz is located opposite the Gemäldegalerie and has about 200 sqm of exhibition space. Room plan see appendix

4. General conditions for the realization of projects

The Contemporary Exhibitions Office and the Office for Public Relations of the Academy will be available for consultation, help plan and organize the exhibition, and offer PR support. It will primarily

  • provide conceptual support in the realization of the exhibition,
  • manage the entire project budget,
  • handle loan transactions and the operation of the exhibition, guarantee adequate conservatory conditions, etc.,
  • plan exhibition contrivances and displays, install and dismount the exhibition together with the Department of Facility Management and Procurement (GTB) in accordance with the given structural and safety conditions,
  • produce printed matter (invitation, folder) along the lines of the Academy’s CI,
  • do press work, including assistance with the project’s presentation on the Academy’s homepage, electronic mailings, and advertisements in accordance with the available budget.

All services can only be provided within the limits of the schedule.

Curators commit themselves to at least three mediation events (e.g. curator tours or workshops) during the exhibition. An earmarked budget of 1,500 euros (gross = net) is available for this purpose.
