Exhibit Studio

Open Call

and Submission deadline: 10.12. 2021, 11.00 a.m.

The Academy’s Exhibit Studio is a new exhibition space for students and run by students. It is located at the Academy’s building at Schillerplatz coordinated and curated by Viktoria Bayer and Natalia Gurova, who are studying at the Academy and working at the Contemporary Exhibitions Office.

In 2022 they are planning to organize five shows.

For the first exhibition starting mid of February students are invited to submit artworks and project ideas for the group exhibition addressing the topic of resilience and survival strategies.

You can find the floorplan here.

Submission topic

We are living in troublesome times and try to navigate through them, while we are surrounded by an increasing instability. In order to cope with social, political, and economical challenges we steadily transform, unconsciously and consciously. Over the millenia our natural habitat has done an admirable job. Seeds developed resilience against all different kinds of environmental difficulties and species enter synergies in order to support each other. We know that the era of individualism and extractivism made us tired and needs to end now. But what kind of alternatives can we imagine? Which role could artistic practices play in dealing with struggles, conflicts and ideas of resilience? Can we try to live, think, decide and (un)learn differently than we used to? And who is even the “we” that we are constantly referring to?

What can be submitted?

Projects, artworks, art practices, ideas for additional programs (like workshops, readings, discussions & talks...), display solutions, ...

Who can participate?

Students from all departments of the Academy can apply for the open call.

Aims

The Exhibit Studio is envisioned as a flexible and resilient structure open for collaborations, experiments, discussions, shows, art-related and non-art-related practices. The two coordinators/curators imagine it as a space for experiments. At least as far as the institution’s infrastructure allows.

Their approach and practice is anti-racist, queer-feminist, anti-classist,  anti-discriminatory, inclusive and concerned with accessibility. According to these values they will develop their shows.

Collective responsibilities

The Exhibit Studio is considered as a space of collective responsibilities. That means that the invited artists/students are to a big extent responsible for planning, organizing and setting up their exhibition on their own. The coordinators (Viktoria Bayer & Natalia Gurova) are there to support them by bringing the students’ ideas into life. They coordinate the production of the invitation cards and exhibition graphics (which have to follow the new corporate design of the Academy), support the publicity of the show and are there to help with questions of organization and installation, if needed. Additionally, the artists will get support for technical requirements, painting the space and building structures for the space.

Budget

There is a budget for each show of maximum 5000 euros. This money can be spent on the production of new works, material costs, transport, displays, equipment rentals, fees and accompanying programs. For each show the specific budget needs to be negotiated with the Contemporary Exhibitions Office.
