Emanuel and Sofie Fohn Scholarships 2025

This year, the Emanuel and Sofie Fohn Scholarship Foundation is once again awarding up to ten scholarships, with a total value of €20,000.

Funding is provided for highly talented students of Fine Arts and Art History who are in the final phase of their studies, as well as graduates who completed their degree no more than two years ago. In accordance with the Foundation’s purpose, the call is addressed to individuals from Austria and South Tyrol, or Italians whose first language is German.

Sofie Fohn, née Schneider (1899–1990), painter and widow of the painter Emanuel Fohn (1881–1966), bequeathed assets to establish the Emanuel and Sofie Fohn Scholarship Foundation. Since 2018, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna has been responsible for the administration of the foundation.

 

Jury

The jury, chaired by Ingeborg Erhart, Vice-Rector for Art and Teaching, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, will select the scholarship recipients:

Julienne Lorz, University of Applied Arts Vienna
Jasper Sharp, Curator, Vienna
Jürgen Tabor, Generali Foundation Collection – Permanent Loan at Museum der Moderne Salzburg

 

Applicants (The criteria are stipulated by the founders in the foundation charter):

  • Highly talented students in the final phase of their studies, as well as graduates of universities, colleges, and art academies (BA/MA/Diploma completed within the last two years: October 2023 – October 2025)
  • Austrian citizenship or South Tyrolean origin, or Italians whose first language is German
  • Previous scholarship holders are excluded from reapplying

 

Required Documents (to be submitted as PDFs):

  • Curriculum vitae (+ proof of enrollment, BA/MA/Diploma certificate)
  • A transcript of records listing all completed exams (even if the degree has already been completed)
  • Copy of passport
  • For Fine Arts students: Portfolio with the five most important artistic works/projects
  • For Art History students: Up to three current publications/texts or writing samples (e.g., catalog texts, published exhibition reviews, dissertation proposals, or texts that provide the jury with an impression of writing competence, such as image interpretations), max. 2 pages each
