Poster 100 Years - SHE* CAME TO STAY

Deadline: Monday, Feb 22, 2021, 06:00pm

The Vice Rectorate for Art and Teaching of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna invites students of the Academy to submit drafts for the design of a poster for the event series 100 YEARS - "SHE* CAME TO STAY". The competition is open to ordinary students of all institutes.

One hundred years ago, women were admitted for the first time to study at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna for the first time. The event series "100 YEARS - SHE* CAME TO STAY" uses the anniversary to honor and continue the struggle for equality.
Activism and politics put pressure on the Academy of Fine Arts. The Association of Women Visual Artists of Austria, founded in 1911, fought for the opening of women's studies. The Ministry for Cultus and Education also put pressure on the Academy through inquiries. It was not until two years after the introduction of suffrage in Austria that women were able to apply to the Academy for the first time. In 1920, 14 women (5%) were admitted and studied together with 250 male fellow students.
In 1947, Gerda Matejka-Felden became the first woman to be appointed as a professor at the Academy. Since 1991, the Working Group for Equal Opportunity Issues, which was founded at that time, has been working for equality in applications, admissions and personnel issues. Today, there are 66% female students, 60% women on the artistic and scientific staff, and 55% women professors*. From 2011 to 2019, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna became the first university in Austria to be led by a team of female rectors.
The Academy is currently pursuing goals such as non-binary and anti-discrimination supported by legal frameworks and operating agreements. Current struggles for educational justice are also directed against discrimination based on socio-economic background, age, ethnicity, migration, racialization, rejectionism, sexual orientations or religious confessions.
The event series 100 YEARS - "SHE* CAME TO STAY combines exhibitions, posters, talks, walks, performances, etc., with current issues and discussions. Remembrance work with current questions and disputes. The struggles continue!
