CALL Publication Series 2025 for text-based publications

Deadline: Wednesday, Oct 15, 2025, 11:00am

submission form

The Publication Series of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna now comprises 27 volumes. It receives its content orientation from the Publications Advisory Board, whose members are the Rector, representatives of the institutes and the head of the library. The series underwent a reorientation in 2021 and now has two publishing formats: text-based paperbacks, which can be published promptly and for which this call applies, and publications with more freedom of design, such as artists' books (for which a call is expected to follow in the fall).

Information on the volumes of the Publication Series can be found at the Academy website.
They are also available Open Access in the Academy's Repository.

The text-based volumes are all peer reviewed. They are published in pocket format 10.8 x 17.8 cm in the typical design of the series with Sternberg Press.

The current call is aimed at the production of publications for which the manuscript has been completed as far as possible and at least a comprehensive text sample is available, e.g. an entire chapter, for a timely start of production. Thematically, the call is open.

The publications in the series have an average page count of 256 pages (in printed form), with approx. 1,500-1,800 characters with spaces per page.

The projects will be financed to the extent of editing, printing and layout costs. Costs such as authors' fees, translations or image rights are not covered. The jury reserves the right to support projects also with partial funding.

A connection of the submitted project to the Academy is required. Both volumes with editors and monographs can be submitted. The language of the publication series should remain primarily English.

Students can submit under the condition that a professor/lecturer agrees to accompany the submission and production process to ensure feasibility.

The selection of volumes is made by a jury consisting of five members, two external and three internal from the publication advisory board. The jury meeting for the current call will take place in November 2025.

Your submission should include the following (one PDF, max. 10 MB):
- a clearly formulated proposal for the publication project including a list of authors and contents (proposal with max. 5,000 characters)
- Text sample, e.g. one chapter
- Timetable for the production: when are texts completely finished to be handed over for peer review/editing, is there a point in time when the printed book is needed, etc.
- Cost outline: Which costs are there in addition to the subsidized costs, how are these covered, are there any funding commitments or applications for funding, etc.

Deadline: Wed 15. October 2025, 11:00 h

We look forward to your submissions!
