submission form

The Rectorate is now opening the call for submissions for new, design-oriented volumes of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. The call is aimed at employees (including project staff) and students of the Academy.

The publications of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna
The publication series now comprises 26 volumes. Volumes 1-11 are published by Schlebrügge.Editor, the books from volume 12 onwards are published by Sternberg Press. The series underwent a reorientation in 2021 and now has two forms of publications: on the one hand, text-based paperbacks which are published promptly and by Sternberg, and, in addition, publications with more freedom of design, such as artists' books.

A publication advisory board with representatives from the institutes and the library works together with the Rectorate on strategic questions concerning the series. The advisory board is supplemented by an external jury, which makes the selection from the submissions.

For the design-oriented volumes, a cooperation with Mark Pezinger Books was launched this year. The Viennese publishing house is run by Thomas Geiger and Astrid Seme and is specialized in artists’ books.

The current call focuses on projects and submissions from the fields of fine arts, restoration and architecture that explore the possibilities of artists’ books. In the selection process, attention is paid to the relevance of the artistic production and the quality of the concept. Particular attention will be paid to surprising forms of knowledge production and their editorial, formal, haptic and sustainable interconnections within the publication.

Before the deadline (in October), there will be an opportunity to take part in a workshop with the publisher; an invitation to this will follow separately.

Students can submit under the condition that a professor/lecturer agrees to accompany the submission and production process to ensure feasibility.

The projects are financed to the extent of editing, printing and layout costs. Costs for authors' fees, translations or image rights will not be covered.

The submitted project must be related to the Academy (e.g. projects by staff and students, projects within the framework of research projects at the Academy or publications that deal with the history and/or structure of the Academy). Both anthologies and monographs can be submitted. The language of the publications should remain primarily English. However, the submission of German or bilingual publications is also possible.

The design and production process will be carried out in close cooperation with the publisher and Astrid Seme, Studio. The publication project should be ready for publication in the calendar year 2025. One or two volumes will be selected for production per call.

Your submission should include the following:
- a clearly formulated proposal for the publication project including a list of authors or artists as well as details on the structure of the book and the graphic concept (proposal with max. 5,000 characters)
- Timetable for realization
- Cost outline with details of page count, format, number of illustrations, reproduction costs if applicable, etc.
- Format: PDF with max. 30 pages, size: max. 5 MB
- File name: Name_first_name_project_name

Deadline: Wednesday, 6.11.2024, 11 a.m.
The jury's decision will be made in December 2024.
