Emanuel und Sofie Fohn-Stipendium

Announcement of the Emanuel and Sofie Fohn Scholarships 2019

Sofie Fohn, born as Schneider (1899 - 1990), painter and widow of the painter Emanuel Fohn (1881 - 1966), has donated assets in her will to the Emanuel and Sofie Fohn Scholarship Foundation. Since 2018 the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna has taken over the administration of the foundation.

The foundation supports highly talented students of artistic disciplines, in particular fine arts and art history. Also, students who complete post-graduate studies, seminars, or other advanced training are allowed to submit.

Travel Allowances for PhD Candidates

Deadline: Tuesday, Dec 31, 2019, 11:00am

The travel allowances support regular doctoral students of the Academy in presenting dissertation / PhD project results at international conferences and symposia or in the presentation of art projects. Prerequisite is an active participation in the conference, the symposium or the art presentation.

The Learning-on-the-Job scholarship offers dissertation supervisors the opportunity to apply for a scholarship for doctoral/PhD candidates.

Short term grants abroad

Deadline: Tuesday, Dec 10, 2019, 11:00am

The scholarship for a short-term stay abroad for doctoral/PhD candidates supports stays abroad for e.g. research, field research, archival research, interviews, which are necessary for the dissertation or the PhD project. Stays abroad are funded for a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 8 weeks.

Closed Calls

„Manifestation weltlicher und geistlicher Macht“ (manifestation of secular and spiritual power)

In cooperation with the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien and the Verein zur Generationenübergreifenden Kunst- & Kulturförderung (Association for the Promotion of Cross-Generational Art and Culture), the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is organising a call. Students and graduates of the Academy are invited to submit art pieces or projects to the theme „Manifestation weltlicher und geistlicher Macht“ (manifestation of secular and spiritual power). Entries may be submitted for works that correspond with at least one of the two works, either the "Reichskrone" (Imperial Crown from the Imperial Treasury) and/or the ivory relief of the "Wiener Gregorplatte ".

Birgit Jürgenssen Prize

Deadline: Thursday, Feb 21, 2019, 11:00am

The Birgit Jürgenssen Prize will again be awarded to an enrolled student of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna for a media artwork, under particular consideration of works of artistic photography, video or (digital) media art. The prize is endowed with 5,000 euros and an exhibition at the Academy.

ArtStart: Berufsziel Künstler_in 2019/20

Programm zur Förderung des künstlerischen Nachwuchses an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien

Das Programm ArtStart: Berufsziel Künstler_in richtet sich an Absolvent_innen (Abschluss zwischen 1. Oktober 2017 und 30. Juni 2019) der Studienrichtungen Bildende Kunst sowie des künstlerischen Lehramts (Diplom/MA) an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien, die den Berufseinstieg als Künstler_in planen. Im Rahmen des einjährigen Stipendienprogramms werden 12 Stipendiat_innen darin unterstützt, in der Kunstszene erste Akzente zu setzen. Ein zentrales Element von ArtStart ist dabei die professionelle Begleitung der Absolvent_innen durch Mentor_innen – universitätsexterne Personen aus dem Kunst- und Kulturbereich –, die Vorbildfunktion haben, praktischen Input aus ihrer Berufswelt geben und national und international als „Türöffner_innen“ fungieren. Das Programm dient der Förderung des künstlerischen Nachwuchses an der Akademie sowie der gleichberechtigten Teilhabe der Geschlechter im Kunstbereich und bietet Absolvent_innen die Möglichkeit, Einblicke in die verschiedenen Bereiche und Anforderungen, die der Beruf als Künstler_in mit sich bringt, zu erhalten.

Honoring the thinker, curator, author, and teacher Cathrin Pichler, this Prize will be awarded to a student of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, who - in the sense of Cathrin Pichler - deals with specific artistic methods and practices as contribution and intervention to a scientific discourse.
